Cetinje

At the foot of Mount Lovcen, sufficiently distant and hidden from eyes of the enemies and sufficiently close at hand and open for all friendly souls, there is Cetinje - town museum, for centuries the royal capital of Montenegro and the source of its spirituality and statehood. Within the past five centuries, Cetinje (20.000 inhabitants) as the royal capital of Montenegro used to be and remained cultural and educational centre of the Montenegrin state which numerous cultural and historical monuments testify to. Cetinje monastery, Monastery museum, National museum, Njegos's museum, Etnographical museum, Historical and the museum of art, The Central National Library, The Archieves of Montenegro, Royal National Theatre of Montenegro "Zetski Dom" and numerous embassy buildings from the begining of the 20th century, are the places not to be avoided

Podgorica

 

Commercial, political, administrative and cultural centre of Montenegro. Main and the biggest town of Montenegro 170.000 inhabitants, is located at the crossroads of several significant routes, on the banks of six rivers, in Skadar Lake valley. Its climate and culture make it a typical Montenegrin town. At 44 meters above the sea level, it is 40 km away from the nearest coastal settlement of Petrovac, and 70 km from ski-centre Bjelasica, Kolasin. Between the years 1946 and 1992 it bore the name of Titograd, and Ribnica in the Middle Ages. It is the seat of several theatres, numerous libraries, museums, galleries, cultural institutions, university and the academy of sciences.

Niksic

 

Second largest town 75.000 inhabitants, Niksic is industry oriented town developed thanks to the steel mill, brewery and metal industry. Prince Nikola gives it the first contours of a contemporary town, commisioning a respectable urban expert, Dr Josip Slade. Following the example of European cities, Slade finished the plan in 1883, and in 1990, according to his design the princes's castle was built in the Renessaince style, today the museum and gallery. The town is dominated by the cathedral church, work of the russian architect Mihailo Mihailovic Preobrazenski.

Zabljak

 

Small town (5.000) located at the greatest hight above the sea level at the Balkans - 1.450 metres. It is the main centre of mountain tourism and winter sports of Montenegro. It is the seat of Durmitor National Park which contains 18 glacier lakes, more than 15 peaks over 2000 metres high, rich and versatile flora and fauna and the canyon of the river Tara. Durmitor National Park is inscribed in the UNESCO World herritage list.

Kolasin

 

On the slopes of Mount Bjelasice and on the bank of the river Tara is one of the most attractive centres of winter tourism in Montenegro - 11.000 inhabitants. Ski area is 9 km away from the town. It is the seat of "Biogradska Gora" National Park. Moraca monastery belongs to the municipality of Kolasin.

 

Rozaje

 

In the valley of river Ibar, in the north - eastern part of Montenegro there is Rozaje (25.000 inhabitants). It is surrounded by the wooded mountains of Hajla, Zlijeb, Krstac and Turjak The slopes of mount Turjak have been turned into the most beautiful ski areas. It is the centre of wood processing industry of Montenegro

 

Berane

 

39.000 inhabitants located in the valley of the river Lim and surrounded by the slopes of the high wooded mountains of Bjelasica and Turjak. It is a modern town with wide streets, squares and parks. Some 14 km away from centre, in the direction of Rozaje, there is Lokve ski centre.

 

Pluzine

 

Instead of the former village, due to the construction of hydroelectic power station of "Piva" and creation of Piva lake reservoir, the small town of Pluzine (5.000 inhabitants) was built on a new spacious location. The famous Piva monastery was also moved to a new location in the hills.

 

Bijelo Polje

 

Legend says that the plain where the present day Bijelo Polje is located (57.000 inhabitants) used to be covered by white flowers in the springtime. It is after this that the settlement and the town got the name Bijelo Polje. It is the town on the bank of the roaring river Lim. Two cultural historical monuments testify to the origin of Bijelo Polje and its life through centuries: St. Peter's church and St. Nicholas's church

 

Mojkovac

 

Mojkovac (11.000 citizens), located at the picturesque valley of the river Tara, at the foot of Bjelasica and Sinjajevina mountains, between the national parks Biogradska Gora and Durmitor. Mojkovac has an altitude of 820 m, while it ranges from 750 to 2033 within the municipality. Medivial monastery Dobrilovina, located on the 25th kilometre in the direction of Zabljak, makes the most important cultural monument.

 

Pljevlja

 

The biggest town at the far north of Montenegro, Pljevlja (40.000 inhabitants) dates back to the times of Roman rule over this area. Both in cultural and architectural sense Pljevlja represent the mixture of Cristian and Islamic spirit and it is the proof of tolerance of various religious denominations. Mosti significant monuments in this tow are Husein-Pasha mosque from the 16th century, with 42 metres high minaret, and Sveta Trojica monastery from the 12th century.
